-FRANCOIS PYRARD DE LAVAL, WRITING FROM GOA, EARLY 17TH CENTURY
Every year ships arrive from Gujarat on
India
’s West coast, each worth fifteen, twenty, and thirty thousand crusades, and from
Cambay a ship put into port worth seventy to eighty thousand, carrying cloths of
thirty different sorts.
-TOME` PIRES, WRITING
ABOUT MALACCA, c.1515
Early European travelers visiting
South and
South-east Asia
all commented on the richness of the Indian textile trade.
India
has been producing textiles for more than 4,000
years, and during most of that time
she was supplying a thriving export market.
What was the particular attraction
of Indian cloth? Apart from the luxurious appearance of silk and the light, yet
durable nature of cotton, it was certainly the quality of dyes used in decorating
the fabrics. The brilliance and color fastness of the designs was unrivalled at
the time.
Textiles of the past had little or
no place in the rough and tumble of today’s ‘art silk’ business. We, at Pearl Fashions
take inspiration from the exquisite tradition of design, which has evolved over
the centuries.
Pearl Fashions… is about weaving a new
dimension.
Pearl Fashions…its evolution
In an attempt
to put in practice the theory of evolution of hand crafted textiles by making wearable
and versatile apparels. From its very inception, to where it
is now, it has not only grown, rather it has evolved itself, into the domain of
textile design.
Pearl Fashions currently managed by the trio of Richa Sud
Thakur, Vipul Sud and Tanuja Merianda.
We at, Pearl Fashions aims to take Indian textile
to the threshold of every modern consumer, by producing dresses using
the age-old techniques of textile design and hand-embroidery and integrating
it with savviest selling tool on the net.
In 2007,
Pearl Fashions ventured into the production of wearable
& versatile garments. It entered a new dimension with incorporation of Ms. Richa
Sud Thakur, as a partner in the company. Who brought with her the entrepreneurial
skills required for today’s techno-savvy international selling? She has an experience
of working as a
sampling coordinator for 8 years with a leading international buying agency;
she brought with her the dreams of taking Pearl Fashions to direct retailing in the
domestic as well as in the international market through the net.
In this way, Pearl Fashions
had evolved itself, to follow the thoughts of the people associated with it. It
is flexible in its approach, but stringent in its thoughts. Pearl Fashions, for us is
a concept of the past, re-modeled for the present.
“Creativity knows
no barriers. And improvement brooks no limits. Finding new ways to do things differently
and doing them better, is what growth & development are all about….”
That is what Pearl Fashions is all about
Fabrics at
Pearl Fashions…
The most important aspect of a garment is the fabric. Right choice of
fabric makes the garment look beautiful and if not done so, a good design will also
fail to appeal. Hence to start with fabric, would like to give brief intro regarding
the same.
It was a big benefit
to us as we had direct control on the fabric. Mr. Nirbhay Singh was
associated with Handloom house for 20 years. Due to his association and experience
we had direct control and access to the
India
’s finest and beautiful fabric “Gujarat
hand block print cotton fabric”. The beauty of this fabric is that the dyes used to print and dye the fabric are
all natural vegetable dyes. The colors we have in vegetable dye are all bright and
vibrant. With beautiful floral or linear print on the same, the final printed fabric
looks very beautiful. Another fabric being widely used in our collection is Fine
mangalgiri cotton fabric from down
South India
. Mangalgiri fabric is all handlooms; hence the beauty of the fabric is enacted.
Apart from this
we are also using Schiffley, dobby and few other power loom fabrics.
Would like to
mention here that as most of the fabrics we are using are all hand processed thereby
it also helps to provide and sustain rural employment.
